I found this video at Skate and Annoy. It puts together some ballet and skateboarding, comparing the two. From the site:
rough paralleling of skateboarding and modern ballet dancing, both disciplines evolved in different parts of the 20th century dealing with interpretation of space and environement and both effected profoundly by the involvement of film cameras. seen here are the choreography of george balanchine, the films of norman mclaren and various skate films from late 90’s and early 2000’s
This video seems to be more from the perspective that skateboarding should be more respected because it is like the art of ballet, where I was kind of saying that ballet should be more respected because it is probably more bad-ass than skateboarding.
Back in the day people used to get beat up for skateboarding, now it is so mainstream nobody cares if you skateboard. While I don’t think people necessarily get beat up for doing ballet, it does have a stigma. Some of the comments on Skate and Annoy portray that stigma.
It takes more guts for a man to do ballet than skateboard, so it is more bad-ass.
And then there is this guy that does ballet on a skateboard. He is definitely doing pirrouettes and skating in arabesque.
Enough with the comparisons to skateboarding. I’ll get back to the ballet stuff next.

The Skateboarding and Ballet video is amazing. I am a big fan of skateboarding and I love ballet ( I would love to start taking classes) and I never knew how much the two had in common. The way the video was put together with the music was awesome, I really enjoyed it.
